This weekend Gwilym has been at The Dewerstone and Chudleigh with 2 teenagers on an Intermediate Rock Skills course. Lots of skills covered and lots of climbing done
This is our first Rock Skills course and we are looking forward to running more in the future
This weekend, Gwilym has been at Goblin Combe and The Dewerstone with two clients on an climbing courses looking at setting up their own top ropes and being guided on a multipitch climb
This weekend, Gwilym has been on Dartmoor directing a Rock Climbing Instructor Assessment with 4 candidates. With visits to Hound Tor and Chudleigh during dry Saturday and Dart Rock followed by The Dewerstone during wet Sunday, the candidates had plenty of varied locations to demonstrate their skills.
Gwilym, Robin and Ben were out at Haytor today working with a group from Hamp Estate in Bridgwater. Unfortunately rain stopped play by midday and they ran to the shelter of Dart Rock where it was warmer and drier. All 5 young people managed to climb and belay and learnt to put on their own harnesses and tie themselves in. At the end of the session they even had a little trip through the Dart Rock cave system.
Last week, we had a group of our instructors up in South Wales supporting Bridgwater and Taunton College with their apprentices just like we did the week before. Lots more climbing, biking and expeditions completed with all students and instructors having an enjoyable time. Better weather than the first week was a big moral boost as well.
Last week, we supplied 8 instructors to support Bridgwater College with their apprentice residential programme in South Wales, 42 students, loads of equipment and minibuses arrived at the accommodation near Abergavenny for some team building and route planning before a week of climbing, biking and an overnight expedition. All had a great time and having just finished sorting all the kit and equipment, we start again on Monday for round 2 with the next group.
Well done to Phil and Alex, 2 new SPA holders after a weekend in the sun. Day 1 at Chudleigh (Limestone) and Day 2 at Hound Tor (Granite) saw Gwilym assessing them in personal climbing, setting up rope systems for groups, dealing with problems, abseiling, teaching at a climbing wall and general climbing knowledge.
Well done again to both of you
For the last 3 days, Jez has been working with our long term client Andy as he prepares for his SPA assessment which is coming up soon
Gwilym and Mark were in Avon Gorge for the second day of the Mountain Training SPA course they are running for 7 candidates. Another chilly start followed by warm sunshine allowed the candidates to climb some nice route and do some more abseiling.
Gwilym and Mark have been running a Single Pitch Award Training course. They spent the day at Goblin Combe Car Park crag before going to Redpoint for the evening. Lots covered today in relation to Top and Bottom roping, Problem Solving and Abseils. Although a chilly start it soon warmed up and some of the hardier candidates were down to short sleeves
Gwilym has been in North Wales with long term client Andy. A dry day on Sunday saw Andy leading a number of routes under Gwilym's guidance including a number of Severes. Well done Andy. Monday was wet and windy so it was time to play with 1:25k, 1:50k and 1:40k maps in the Llanberis Pass to stay low
On Sunday and today, Gwilym was in Wales with Long Term Client Andy for some time in the Mountains. On Sunday they climbed and got away with it until the last pitch of the last route when the heavens open and they both got very wet. Today they headed up Tryfan via the north ridge for a great day (even in the rain) of scrambling and navigation practice
Another great week on Dartmoor working with MOD Apprentices from Bridgwater College. We had six teams out on the moor each doing a two day hill walking expedition, a days mountain biking and a day of climbing on one of the local tors. All of the guys got involved and had a great time and also rather uncharacteristically, for Dartmoor, the sun was out.
Thanks to Jacob for heading up this week as Gwilym was elsewhere
On Sunday and Monday, long term client Andy was out with Jacob in the Peak District climbing some grit
The first day was spent looking at seconding skills to start off with before introducing Andy to the skills required to lead trad routes. On the second day they headed to Froggat to further develop Andy's lead climbing skills which culminated in him doing his first two trad leads- great effort Andy!
Today Gwilym took Beth to Huntly's Cave to hide from the 100 mph winds and rain in the mountains. They spent the morning looking at ropework and building belays before climbing a very wet V. Diff to finish.
